Matteo Chiappa cherishes European debut
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Trento, Italy, January 7, 2017. On Thursday, January 5 TRENTINO Diatec started their journey in the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men with a 3-0 away victory over Finland’s Hurrikaani LOIMAA. The match coincided with the European debut of Matteo Chiappa, a 23-year-old-player who replaced team captain Filippo Lanza in the third set in the back area of the court.
Actually Chiappa’s European debut was kind of special – he played until the end of the match as a setter and not as libero, as he is used to. This will remain an unforgettable experience since Chiappa had the opportunity to attack some balls, even though he did not score any points.
Though he was born in Milan, Chiappa has spent almost his entire life in Trento. He is only the last of a string of players ‘home grown’ by TRENTINO Diatec and that played for the youth and junior teams of the club before making their debut on the European stage. Chiappa follows in the footsteps of Antonio De Paola (who made his European debut on December 10, 2008 against aon hotVolleys VIENNA), Nicola Leonardi (who played against Portol Palma MALLORCA on February 18, 2009), Michele Fedrizzi, Lorenzo Gallosti, Michele Morelli, Filippo Lanza, Sebastiano Thei, Gabriele Nelli, Simone Giannelli, Tiziano Mazzone and Carlo De Angelis.
Giannelli remains the youngest player of TRENTINO Diatec to have played a European Cups match – he did so on November 19, 2014 at the age of 18 years, three months and 10 days when the Italians played Vojvodina NS Seme NOVI SAD of Serbia in the CEV Cup.
