CANAKKALE rout Levski to move on to Challenge Cup 8th Finals
2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Women

Sofia, Bulgaria, January 10, 2017. Turkey’s CANAKKALE Bldspor Kulübü claimed on Tuesday also their second matchup with Bulgaria’s Levski SOFIA on schedule for the 16th Finals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – Women. The winners of the 2016 BVA Cup cruised to a compelling 25-12, 25-12, 25-18 victory in just 55 minutes of play and in the next round will play the winners of the tie starring Olympiacos PIRAEUS and titleholders C.S.M. BUCURESTI.

Levski SOFIA claimed a 4-2 lead after two aces scored by Kathryn Dimitrova but this was the only exception as the opening set was fully controlled and dominated by the visitors. They put the hosts under pressure with their serve and the Bulgarian outside spikers made many mistakes in reception and in attack as well. CANAKKALE rallied to an eight-point lead at 20-12 and scored another five points in a row to finish the set off as Mia Jerkov successfully converted all of her attempts in attack.

The players coached by Üzeyir Özdurak continued to play in the same way also in the second set – serving strong, keeping the number of errors to a minimum, this resulting in a compelling 16-7 lead at the second technical time-out. Their perfect work in defence and attack eventually produced another 25-12 win.

The third set followed the same plot; CANAKKALE claimed a five-point lead at the second technical time-out and their solid overall performance propelled them to a 22-13 score. The captain of Levski, Kristiana Petrova, scored three aces, Gergana Georgieva added one block and a powerful spike by Dimitrova helped the hosts close in at 18-22 but some Bulgarian mistakes paved the way towards the eventual 25-18 win by CANAKKALE.

Üzeyir Özdurak, coach of CANAKKALE Bldspor Kulübü: “In my opinion everything was decided already with the first match in Turkey but I am satisfied with our performance today. We remained concentrated from start to end and this was really important. Levski have a young team and must work hard in future. The real competition for us will start in the next round. I hope we can show our best and achieve something big.”

Mia Jerkov, player of CANAKKALE Bldspor Kulübü: “I am happy, maybe it looked easy but matches like this one are difficult too. Levski have a young team and when they played at the top of their abilities and we were not focussed, they scored a couple of points in a row and immediately put us under pressure. We must play our best in every match we contest. If we do not, we can lose to any opponent, so we stayed concentrated on the game and this is important. Another thing was our difficult journey from Turkey because of the bad weather conditions. I want to congratulate Levski because they have a really young team with a lot of potential and wish them all the best for their next endeavours. When we let them play, they showed some good things and that they have been working really hard. We did not show our best performance, but did enough to win and to go home without suffering any injury.”
