Fenerbahce drop just 40 points to Azerrail
2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League - Women

Istanbul, Turkey, January 11, 2017. Burhan Felek Voleybol Salonu is very much the home of Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL, and it told as they ran out 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-9) winners in their Pool C match against Azerrail BAKU in the Turkish megalopolis on Wednesday evening.

The opening set started with points for both sides keeping the score close. Fenerbahçe went in to the first technical time-out ahead (8-3) after an ace from Maret Balkestein-Grothues. After this, they accelerated and Azerrail BAKU were forced to take their second time-out as they trailed 13-5. However, Fenerbahçe's dominance continued and they reached the second technical time-out with a demanding lead of 16-7. The first set finished comfortably for the home team as they took it 25-12.

The tide looked like it had turned at the start of the second set, as Azerrail BAKU went in to the first technical time-out ahead 8-5. After this, Fenerbahçe responded well and turned things around to lead 16-12.  After the second technical time-out, Fenerbahçe’s strong play meant they took the set 25-19.

Their dominance continued and in the third set, the teams went in to the first technical time-out with a score of 8-4 for Fenerbahçe. This lead grew and by the second technical time-out the score was 16-7 for the home team. The hosts eventually gained a comprehensive 3-0 victory after they took the third set 25-9.  Kim Yeon-Koung dominated in what was Fenerbahçe's first home match of the competition, with her scoring 22 points, nearly a complete set on her own.

Marcello Abbondanza, head coach of Fenerbahçe said: “I am very happy today with the performance of my team.  It is not easy after the break because we have not played for a long time. Today my team performed well and I think this is good way to start the rest of the season.”

Fenerbahçe libero player Melis Yilmaz said: “We have trained hard for this match. Azerrail BAKU are a good team but we performed our tactics on the court well and got the 3-0 victory we were after.”

While Eda Erdem Dündar added: “We started 3-0 at home and it is very good for us.  They played well but we did not allow them to play that strong because of our services.  I congratulate my teammates and we will continue to play as we did today.”
