Luxembourg, February 28, 2017. It has taken 76 matches to find the ‘Magnificent Six’, i.e. the elite teams progressing to the Playoffs 6 of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League – Women. The competition started a way back in October 2016 and the League Round ended on Tuesday night with the last eight matches, which determined the six teams that will be fighting for a spot in the Final Four tournament to be hosted by Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO on April 22-23 in Treviso. The ‘Magnificent Six’ are the four pool winners – Liu Jo Nordmeccanica MODENA, Dinamo MOSCOW, Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL and VakifBank ISTANBUL – plus the two runners-up with the best result – Volero ZÜRICH and Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL. All Volleyball fans can now start looking forward to the Drawing of Lots taking place on Friday, March 3 at 11:00 CET in Luxembourg to know who plays who in the next stage of the competition.
Dinamo MOSCOW, Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL and VakifBank ISTANBUL had secured their progression to the Playoffs 6 last week already – but on Tuesday night, they completed a clean sweep of the six matches they contested in their respective pools. Dinamo MOSCOW did so courtesy of a 3-1 away victory (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-22) over CS Volei Alba BLAJ of Romania, whereas Fenerbahce SK ISTANBUL used most of their second lines to still rout France’s ST-RAPHAËL Var VB in three straight sets (27-25, 25-22, 25-21).
As for VakifBank ISTANBUL, the 2011 and 2013 gold medal winners from Europe’s elite club competition rallied to their sixth straight victory in Pool D after edging Russia’s Uralochka-NTMK EKATERINBURG 3-1 (25-19, 25-27, 25-20, 25-18).
Liu Jo Nordmeccanica MODENA have had many ups and downs in their domestic league but they seem to produce their best when they take to the court in the CEV Volleyball Champions League – and so they did also on Tuesday night when they cruised to a comprehensive 3-0 victory (25-13, 25-18, 25-22) in their make-or-break matchup with Poland’s Chemik POLICE. As a result, MODENA finished first in Pool A with a 5-1 win-loss record, with POLICE ending in third place to miss on a spot in the Playoffs.
Eczacibasi VitrA ISTANBUL and Volero ZÜRICH complete the line-up for the knockout stage of the competition following their respective victories over DRESDNER SC (3-1; 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18) and Dinamo KRASNODAR (3-0; 25-18, 25-23, 25-22) in Pool D and B. As a result, as many as three teams from Turkey – all of them from Istanbul – remain in contention for Europe’s most coveted Volleyball crown.
The first round of the Playoffs 6 will be contested on March 21-23 with the re-matches following on April 4-6, 2017.
