United Volleys RHEINMAIN strike again
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men
Rüsselsheim, Germany, March 2, 2017. The United Volleys RHEINMAIN keep taking the CEV Volleyball Cup by storm, after celebrating their fifth victory in their fifth international match. Nevertheless, the 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-20) win against Lindemans AALST from Belgium was definitely the toughest challenge the young team from Germany had to face so far.
Especially the first two sets where both touch-and-go, seeing a strong blocking game from the home team and an indefatigable setter Frank Depestele with lots of clever passes and services being the standout player on the other side of the net. It took the United Volleys until after second technical time-out to break away by scoring several points in a row. Only when team captain Christian Dünnes managed to hit his attack forcefully right through the Belgian block and score for 24-21, the 1-0 lead in the match was home and hosed.
Set two could have easily gone to the visiting team, even when the Germans turned an early 4-8 deficit into a 14-12 lead with a true blocking festival. Finally, it was Depestele’s courageous attack bouncing back from the top of the net, which made the United Volleys celebrate the final 26-24.
This seemed to be the crucial moment of the match, for the home team started furiously in set three while AALST seemed dumbfounded for quite a while, this resulting in a compelling 11-3 lead for RHEINMAIN. Depestele’s service brought his side a bit closer again, but the United Volleys were already on the way to another surprising victory.
“We definitely needed this result to leave the door open for the semi-finals, for playing this great team in their own place at home in Aalst will be a whole different story,” stated United Volleys head coach Michael Warm.
