No sensation in Karlovy Vary, TOURS VB rally to easy victory
2017 CEV Volleyball Cup - Men

Karlovy Vary, Czech Republic, March 2, 2017. One of the ‘hottest’ candidates for the title, France’s TOURS VB, made on Thursday night a big step forward in their quest for a spot in the semis of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup – Men. The gold medallists from the 2005 edition of the CEV Volleyball Champions League beat ČEZ KARLOVARSKO 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18) in the first leg of the quarterfinals, with the re-match set to follow in two weeks in France.

The away team pressured the Czech opponents with great services and they also showed a brilliant performance in reception. “They showed their high quality, TOURS VB were the better team during the whole game,” said the head coach of ČEZ KARLOVARSKO Jiří Novák, a former captain of PARIS Volley and Champions League winner. “We are going to play a good game in Tours and we will see how far this is going to take us,” he added.

The setter of TOURS VB, Guillermo Hernan Ruperez did a great job in the matchup with the Czechs as much as did middle blocker Philipp Collin and the best scorer of the French team, Levi Alves Cabral who replaced the injured Adam White.

The full house in Karlovy Vary cheered also for David Konečný, the captain of TOURS VB and one of the best Czech players of his generation. “It was nice to play here, I met with my friends and my family,” said Konečný. “We expected a more difficult game. We served really well and KARLOVARSKO helped us with a few mistakes in each set. But we are not yet in the semis, KARLOVARSKO have a strong team and still have a chance of making it to the next round.”

Michal Kriško, opposite hitter of ČEZ KARLOVARSKO and best scorer of the game with 12 points: “We are disappointed, we played worse than usual. With such performance we definitely can’t beat a high-quality team like TOURS VB.”

Giampaolo Medei, head coach of TOURS VB: “Every match at this level is very difficult. Our players are quite tired because we played three consecutive games last week. However, we were absolutely ready for today; we served really well and had a great block. All players played very well and were able to perform to the best of their abilities.”
