Bar, Montenegro, October 3, 2014. The 2014 men’s BVA Cup semifinals will take place tomorrow, Saturday, at the magnificent Topolica sports hall in the Montenegrin Adriatic city of Bar. In the first one, starting at 17:30 local time, Turkey’s Maliye Milli Piyango ANKARA will take on Greece’s PAOK THESSALONIKI. The organizing team of Buducnost PODGORICA will then face Romania’s Stiinta Explorari BAIA MARE at 20:00.
The losers of the two semifinals will challenge each other for the bronze on Sunday at 16:00. The first whistle of the grand final to determine this year’s BVA Cup holder will then sound at 18:30. The winner will also earn a spot in the 2nd Round of the 2015 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup - Men, to measure up to Slovakia’s Spartak MYJAVA in two home-and-away matches.
Buducnost is the incumbent vice champion of Montenegro, having finished second only to CEV Champions League regular Budvanska Rivijera BUDVA. Stiinta Explorari ended up in sixth place in the 2014 edition of the Romanian championship, just below the qualification line for the European Cups, and will try to make it to the Challenge Cup through this zonal competition.
PAOK and Maliye Milli Piyango also finished sixth in their national leagues, those of Greece and Turkey, respectively, but for the team from Ankara this represents the only chance to play in the European Cups, since Turkey’s quota has already been filled up by the teams occupying the first five places. Maliye Milli Piyango is in fact the pre-favorite to win the BVA Cup, even only for the reason that the Turkish representatives have always celebrated with the trophy every time they took part in the history of the competition. Furthermore, the team will be defending the cup for Turkey after last year’s winner Fenerbahce Grundig ISTANBUL went on all they to triumph with the 2014 Challenge Cup as well.
