Basel, Switzerland, December 29, 2014. Switzerland’s Volero ZURICH and Brazil’s Molico/Nestle OSASCO will measure strengths in Monday’s final of the 26th Women’s Top Volley International in Basel. In Sunday evening’s semifinals Volero shut out Turkey’s Galatasaray Daikin ISTANBUL and Molico/Nestle overcame a 0:2 deficit against France’s RC CANNES to claim the last gold medal match vacancy.
Everybody knew it would be all or nothing on the second day of the prestigious international volleyball tournament in Switzerland. In the last two pool games, Molico/Nestle recovered from the bitter defeat against Volero from the day before with a 3:1 (25-21, 25-18, 25-27, 26-24) victory over the young Serbians from Partizan Vizura BEOGRAD, and RC CANNES, on the other hand, outplayed Galatasaray Daikin in straight sets - 3:0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-14), setting up the two semifinal clashes scheduled for later on that day - Volero vs. Galatasaray Daikin and RC CANNES vs. Molico/Nestle.
In the first semifinal game, Volero rolled over the Turkish opponent. The multiple Swiss champions were unstoppable in their offensive game; Galatasaray Daikin was able to keep the deficit short, as it could count on Italian opposite Nadia Centoni, who scored impressive 17 points. Nevertheless, the Turkish side did not find a way to block Volero’s top scorer Olesia Rykhliuk (22 points), who is also one of the best scorers in the 2015 CEV DenizBank Volleyball Champions League. As a result, Volero kept the pace high and won the game by 3:0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-20).
In the second semifinal, the unbeaten team from Cannes, which had lost no sets until then, faced the Brazilians from Molico/Nestle. The multiple French champions seemed to be willing to keep their clean sheet record in the first two sets. The Brazilians despaired in their own offense, whereas RC CANNES took a 2:0 lead, keeping calm and steady in spiking and blocking. However, Molico/Nestle did not give in. The Brazilians came back with an impressive willingness to win even after the second set loss – and made the impossible possible: coach Luizomar De Moura’s squad tied the game in front of the disbelieving crowd. Molico/Nestle played with passion and overcame the French in the tiebreaker to shape up the final 3:2 (30-32, 21-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-9) after 137 minutes of pure thrill and 23 points from the game’s top scorer Thaisa Menezes.
The spectators may now look forward to an exciting last day on Monday at the Top Volley in Basel. After the fifth place game between the teams of Partizan Vizura and Russia’s Zarechie ODINTSOVO at 14:00 local time, Galatasaray Daikin and RC CANNES play for bronze at 16:30. The big gold medal clash between Volero and Molico/Nestle at 19:00 will crown this year’s tournament winner.
