First edition of Street Volleyball festival crowned with success in Valpovo
News from the National Federations
Valpovo, Croatia, June 16, 2016. The first edition of a much anticipated Street Volleyball festival was successfully organised this past weekend in the Croatian city of Valpovo. The event was organised by the local Centre for Education and Sport and the City of Valpovo in cooperation with the Croatian Volleyball Federation and the County of Osijek-Baranja. The festival was open to young players aged from 7 to 13 with two competitions running at the same time – the so-called ‘super mini Volleyball’ for those aged 7 to 10 and a mini Volleyball tournament for 10 to 13-year-old kids.
The preparations for the event had lasted for quite some time and the hard work of the organisers paid dividends as more than 700 young Volleyball players from Croatia and three neighbouring countries – Serbia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina – joined the festival, which turned out to be one of the largest sporting events of this kind ever held in the region.
Since young players from abroad travelled to Valpovo as well, the festival was a real international event and the local organisers are very much hoping that they can repeat the experience again and for many years to come. The opening ceremony was attended by the Mayor of Valpovo, Mr Leon Žulj, the local majorettes as well as by the MIR choir from the city of Belišće that performed the Croatian national anthem.
As many as 19 Volleyball courts were set up across the main promenade of Valpovo where 210 matches starring a total 86 teams were played throughout the day.
Though each and every participant deserved a round of applause, especially for the spirit of fair play everyone demonstrated, here are the eventual winners of the competition:
