Italy set the bar high for home #EuroVolleyU17M qualifier in Ostuni
2017 CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship - Men

Ostuni, Italy, July 28, 2016. The qualification tournament for next year’s CEV U17 Volleyball European Championship – Men taking place from July 28-31 in Ostuni officially got started on Wednesday with a media meeting organised at the premises of the local Town Hall. The national teams of Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Spain will be vying for first place in order to secure their participation in next year’s inaugural championship. The pre-event press conference was attended by representatives of the local authorities, the Italian Volleyball Federation (FIPAV), the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI) as well as by Italy’s coach Mario Barbiero and libero Damiano Catania. All matches will be streamed live on the official website

Italy coach Mario Barbiero said: “Striving constantly for excellence means being focussed and determined to go for the best result. I would like to thank you all for your warm welcome. The place where we have been staying offers the right conditions for us to prepare for this competition in the best way. These factors play a major role, so I would like to thank the local Organising Committee for all their support. The boys are very committed to working hard and doing their utmost, showing a competitive attitude which bodes well for the future. Being here is great, Volleyball and sport in general offer an education opportunity to get in touch and familiarise with different cultures, habits and ways of thinking. This opportunity may be seen as a further boost for our athletes’ growth. Volleyball at youth level here in Apulia is thriving. Even though Italy is always among the top five in the ranking of all major competitions, we should not forget that there is still a lot to work to be done.”

Damiano Catania, libero: “We have been working hard here. Besides our training camp, which included some friendly matches with Pallavolo 2000 Ostuni, we have had the opportunity to visit the city and we really liked it. We will do our best to achieve a good result.”

Gianfranco Coppola, Mayor of Ostuni: “I very much look forward to hosting such an important event. I am grateful to those who have helped us place our city on the international sports map. Ostuni can boast a thriving sporting environment, where Volleyball plays a key role. Our team Pallavolo 2000 Ostuni recently moved up to Serie B and such outstanding results have been achieved also thanks to the dedication and commitment of the local managers. They can rest assured that I will continue to support their activities and work.”

Giuseppe Manfredi, FIPAV Vice-President: “I would like to thank the Municipality, Mr Angelo Biasi and Pallavolo 2000 Ostuni for the enthusiasm they have showed towards the organisation of this European qualifier. This qualification tournament is an important event for us. The athletes are U15 and that means we are looking to the future with confidence and excitement. These young players are committed to working hard and the organisation of this competition shows that there is an interest in such valuable young players. Ostuni has hosted several sporting events before but never an international one, so this was an opportunity not to be missed.”

Luigi Dell’Anna, President of FIPAV Regional Committee: “The organisation of this tournament does not happen by chance. Ostuni has been chosen not only for its attractive location – in the heart of the region of Apulia – but also for being the core along with the city of Castellana – of a development programme which has been bearing fruits here in Apulia. The national team includes three players from this area, meaning that our efforts in terms of promotion and training of young athletes are being crowned at both national as well as international level. I am very proud to represent such dynamic environment. We will try our best and take this opportunity to learn from this experience.”

Nicola Cainazzo, CONI Provincial Delegate of Brindisi: “I would like to express my thanks to the Mayor, the Councillor and the whole Municipality for investing in such a sporting event among the many more scheduled in this packed summer calendar. Many thanks to FIPAV as well for drawing a special attention to the region of Apulia, which has an important tourism offer and promising home-grown athletes who have been achieving great results so far.”

Angelo Blasi, Pallavolo 2000 Ostuni President: “We have started this year determined to go for the best result. We knew it would be a challenging journey but we eventually managed to achieve our goals. We did it as a team, not to forget the support we received from the local crowd. My special thanks to the whole Municipality for the opportunity to train and play in such outstanding facilities and to FIPAV for hosting this international tournament. I hope it will serve as springboard for us in the future.”
