2017 EuroVolley connects Azerbaijan and Georgia at all levels
2017 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women

Baku, Azerbaijan, November 26, 2016. Volleyball connects. This is particularly true for the organisers of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley, Azerbaijan and Georgia, as these countries are joining forces for the first time in order to successfully deliver a major sporting event of this calibre. This sense of unity and cohesion is being shared at all levels – by the respective governments, National Federations, officials and – last but not least – players.

This message came out strongly earlier this week when Azerbaijan’s vibrant and cosmopolite capital city, Baku, played host to the Drawing of Lots that set the tone for the much anticipated championship scheduled for September 22 – October 1, 2017 across three cities – Baku, Ganja – Göygöl and Tbilisi.

It is a historic moment for Volleyball, for the entire Caucasus region and especially for the respective Volleyball families of Azerbaijan and Georgia. To further show the sense of unity and mutual cooperation established ahead of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley, the Georgian national team is competing this year in the Azeri Superleague in order to gain valuable experience and prepare in the best way for the European Championship on home soil.

“We are extremely happy with the cooperation we have established with the CEV and with our friends and neighbours from Azerbaijan,” the President of the Georgian Volleyball Federation, Irakli Chachua said in Baku. “We are also happy with the outcome of the Drawing of Lots and we invite all Volleyball fans to visit our country for this truly remarkable moment in our history.”

Waiting to play Volleyball strongholds such as Italy, Croatia and Belarus in Pool B, the young Georgian Volleyball players will first test their skills in Azerbaijan’s national league taking on Telekom, Azerrail, Azeryol and Lokomotiv as they start counting the days down to their historic EuroVolley home debut on September 22, 2017 at New Sports Palace in Tbilisi.
