Jan De Brandt bids farewell to Hungary women’s national team
News from the National Federations
Budapest, Hungary, December 2, 2016. After Hungary secured their spot in the Final Round of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley, it was rumoured that Belgian-born head coach Jan De Brandt would most likely continue his work with the team. De Brandt, however, asked for some time to analyse if he could cope with the busy schedule ahead – 2017 features the second stage of the qualifying process for the 2018 World Championship in late May, Hungary’s historic debut in the FIVB Volleyball World Grand Prix in July and the EuroVolley later in September. In the end, De Brandt announced in an open letter his intention to step down from the position.
De Brandt said his commitment to Turkish club BURSA BBSK for another two years and the busy schedule ahead would prevent him from spending enough time with his family and as a result, he has decided to relinquish the position. “I have spent three wonderful summers with Team Hungary and I am really happy that we could always reach our goals,” he wrote. “I am proud of this and in some way we were able to bring Hungarian women’s Volleyball back to the international stage. I have so many nice memories that I cherish and that I will never forget. THANK YOU!!!”
De Brandt thanked the Hungarian Volleyball Federation for the opportunity to be at the helm of their women’s national team for three years. He also deserved very nice words also to the members of his staff: “We had so much fun and our great, common passion for Volleyball made sure that we survived and, more than that, that we achieved all the goals that we set at the start of each campaign. Thanks for your cooperation, dedication, motivation, comprehension and especially for your friendship. I made really BIG FRIENDS!”
Of course, De Brandt singled out also the players he worked with: “I want to thank all of my players for their belief in my approach and for the excellent performances they delivered on court. We took all kind of obstacles, sometimes I even lost the way but our drive, our love for Volleyball ALWAYS WON. You gave me really big emotions and some of them were so big that I could hardly speak the next day! I will miss you!”
Last but not least, De Brandt thanked the fans for their support: “I want to thank all the fans of the Hungarian women’s Volleyball team. Your support and enthusiasm made sure that we loved to play for our country. I will miss the beautiful anthem played at the start of each game and I will miss you singing 'HAJRA MAGYAROK’ and ‘RIA, RIA, HUNGARIA!’ I want to thank everyone in Hungary for the warm welcome I received in your country. I discovered so many nice places and made so many good friends! Hungary will be FOREVER IN MY HEART! THANK YOU. THANK YOU. THANK YOU.”
Under the guidance of Jan De Brandt, Hungary qualified for the Final Round of the women’s EuroVolley in 2015 doing so for the first time in 28 years – their last appearance dating to the 1987 edition. Hungary also won the 2015 edition of the CEV Volleyball European League and earlier this fall qualified for the Final Round of the 2017 women’s EuroVolley where they will play co-hosts Azerbaijan, Germany and Poland in Pool A.
The name of the new head coach will be announced by the Hungarian Volleyball Federation in due course.
