Hungary’s Volleyball family celebrates 70th anniversary with special gala
News from the National Federations
Budapest, Hungary, December 18, 2016. On Saturday night a special gala was organised at the MKB Bank Centre in Budapest to celebrate the 70th anniversary since the establishment of the Hungarian Volleyball Federation.
As a result, the jubilee was attended by a number of illustrious guests, including CEV Vice President Lubor Halanda, who addressed the audience on behalf of CEV President Aleksandar Boričić, and CEV Board of Administration member Zdeslav Barac, who presented the President of the Hungarian Volleyball Federation, Dr Ferenc Kovacs, with a souvenir specifically designed to commemorate this anniversary.
Dr Kovacs positively reviewed the year which is drawing to a close, stressing that the women’s national team secured their participation in the Final Round of the European Championship coming up next year in Azerbaijan and Georgia – achieving this feat for the second time in a row after a long break encompassing 28 years (from 1987 to 2015).
Dr Kovacs also outlined plans for the further development of Volleyball in Hungary before 70 years of history were reviewed by Hungarian Volleyball Federation’s Secretary General, Mr Zsolt Ludvig, with highlights including four Olympic appearances, a number of European Championship medals and the European League crown claimed by the women’s national team in 2015.
The representatives of the Volleyball family assembled in Budapest were also addressed by Mrs Tünde Szabo, the Under-Secretary of State for Sports of the Ministry of Human Resources who announced that as per decision of the Hungarian government, Volleyball in 2017 will join another five sports to compose an elite group the Hungarian authorities are paying special attention to. This is, of course, a huge milestone for the Hungarian Volleyball family.
During the gala the third and final section of a book reviewing the history of Volleyball in Hungary, covering the time span comprised between 2006 and 2016, was presented as well. The gala came to an end with a series of awards presented to the best players and coaches of the year 2016.
