The Hague to host World Tour and World League on one and same weekend
News from the National Federations
Nieuwegein, Netherlands, December 22, 2016. From 15 to 18 June 2017 the Dutch city of The Hague will be the epicentre of a unique Volleyball event. At the brand new venue ‘Sportcampus Zuiderpark’ the Dutch Volleyball Federation (Nevobo) will host the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour and the FIVB Volleyball World League at the same time. It is the first time in history that these tournaments will be played simultaneously at the same venue.
At this moment The Hague is finishing the construction works of the multifunctional sports and education centre ‘Sportcampus Zuiderpark’. The combination World Tour + World League will be the first international sports event to take place there. Just like during the successful Beach Volleyball World Championships in 2015, the Nevobo will organise this event in cooperation with the sports marketing agency TIG Sports.
FIVB World Tour Beach Volleyball
From 15 – 18 June 2017 a temporary outdoor Beach Volleyball stadium will arise at the premises of the ‘Sportcampus Zuiderpark’ for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour. The last time the FIVB World Tour visited The Netherlands was in 2014, with a Grand Slam in The Hague, Amsterdam and Apeldoorn.
In 2015 Beach Volleyball was ‘top of mind’ for ten days in The Netherlands when the World Championships were played in The Hague, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Apeldoorn. The finals of these World Championships took place at the iconic floating stadium set up in front of the House of Parliament in The Hague.
After being absent for one year, the international Beach Volleyball stars will return to The Hague in 2017. For the athletes of the Dutch national Beach Volleyball team, this World Tour event will be special. ‘Sportcampus Zuiderpark’ is the new training location for the federation’s programme, so the players will literally play a home match.
“It is extremely cool to play a World Tour event in our own town again,” says Alexander Brouwer, who won bronze at the Rio Olympics together with Robert Meeuwsen. “At the World Championships in 2015 we were eliminated sooner than expected. This gives us the chance to display our skills in front of the Dutch audience again.”
The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour will come to ‘Sportcampus Zuiderpark’ in 2018 and 2019 as well. In these years the event will be played indoors.
FIVB Volleyball World League
The World League is a prestigious Volleyball event for men’s national teams, which has been organised annually by the FIVB since 1990. The Netherlands took part in 20 of the previous 27 editions and conquered three medals: gold (1996), silver (1990) and bronze (1998).
In 2017, the Dutch men’s team of coach Gido Vermeulen will play nine pool matches divided over three weekends. The second weekend will take place from 16 – 18 June in The Hague. The matches will be played in the brand new sports hall at the ‘Sportcampus Zuiderpark’, with a capacity of 3,000 spectators. The Dutchmen will face Korea, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
“For us, it’s always an experience to play in front of our own audience,” says Jasper Diefenbach, captain of the Dutch men’s team. “I’ve never played in The Hague before, so I’m looking forward to this! I like the idea of combining both Volleyball and Beach Volleyball into one event. The last few years the sport of Volleyball has been put in the spotlight again. I’m confident that this event will be fantastic.”
Big (Beach) Volleyball party
The combination of the FIVB World Tour and World League will offer the Dutch sports fans a unique opportunity to enjoy Volleyball and Beach Volleyball at the highest level. By purchasing a combination ticket, it will be easy to follow both tournaments. The ticket sales will start on February 1, 2017.
