Snow Volleyball takes centre stage at World Snow Day in Slovenia
News from the National Federations
Planica, Slovenia, January 17, 2017. This past Saturday and Sunday, almost 2,000 kids aged from 4-14 from all across Slovenia came together in the valley below Mt. Ponce to attend the World Snow Day activities taking place at the Olympic Centre Planica.
No less than 478 events in 46 countries brought the joy of snow sports to children, their families and others on the biggest day on snow all year. However, in Planica it was not just about the so-called Nordic disciplines. There were also other fun snow activities included, such as sledging, tubing and playing different games on snow, like snow hockey and snow football. On top of this, the sixth consecutive edition of World Snow Day in Planica was the first one where Snow Volleyball was introduced to Slovenian youngsters.
“I sometimes play Volleyball at school, but I had never tried to play it
on snow before. It was fun, I enjoyed it a lot,” 12-year-old Tina from
Kranj said just after she finally left the snow court in Planica after
playing for more than one hour.
Tanja, a mother of two, was also very satisfied with the event in Planica: “I didn’t imagine Volleyball can be played on snow. My kids, 10-year-old Tjaša and 8-year-old Jaka, tried it and I think they had a lot of fun. I think this kind of events are perfect. Children get to know different kind of sports and find out, which one they like the most.”
It is estimated that a record three million people were reached via the World Snow Day digital channels and at events organised in the 2017 edition.
