CEV Satellite voted ‘Best Sports Event of 2016’ in Lithuania
News from the National Federations
Vilnius, Lithuania, January 17, 2017. Beach Volleyball has been developing at a very fast pace in Lithuania and a further acknowledgement to this positive trend came after the 2016 CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite organised in the country’s capital, Vilnius was chosen as the ‘Best Sports Event of 2016” by the readers of Lithuania’s major sports portal, Sportas.lt
As many as 13 summer sports events featured in the online poll and the CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite eventually beat the competition brought by ‘Bushido Hero 2016’, a high-profile combat sports tournament and by the European Junior Rowing Championships held in Trakai.
The CEV Beach Volleyball Satellite ended in style for Lithuania’s Volleyball family as rising stars Urte Andriukaityte and Irina Zobnina claimed a historic silver medal for the host country after losing the gold medal match to Ukraine’s Valentyna Davidova and Ievgeniia Shchypkova.
The President of the Lithuanian Volleyball Federation, Mr Darius Čerka, is evidently pleased with this acknowledgment and achievement: “We are of course delighted with such a positive review from many sports fans and pleased that Beach Volleyball events are drawing more and more attention from the public. Such high-profile event took place in Lithuania for the first time ever and we are happy it received such positive and enthusiastic reviews. We are grateful and feel honoured at the same time that the CEV has provided us with the opportunity to organise many international events, which have helped raise the interest and attention deserved to Volleyball and Beach Volleyball nationwide,” he said.
“We will be doing our best to maintain such level and even improve the quality of future events taking place in Lithuania,” he continued. “I hope that our work will contribute towards growing the popularity of Volleyball and Beach Volleyball in Lithuania and beyond.”
