Vilnius host EEVZA Masters Championships with record-breaking participation
News from the Zonal Associations
Vilnius, Lithuania, January 28, 2017. Lithuania and more specifically Vilnius are hosting this weekend the 2017 EEVZA Masters Volleyball Championships, with participation of as many as 26 teams from seven countries – Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia and Ukraine – in different age groups. A total of 14 women’s teams are participating in the competition open to players aged from 35+ to 50+, as 12 teams consisting of players aged 35+ to 60+ are competing for the top honours in the men’s tournaments.
“This is a very symbolic event for Lithuania’s Volleyball family since according to the EEVZA proposal, this competition is following in the footsteps of a traditional Masters tournament organised in Lithuania to pay tribute to Volleyball Sports Master Vladimir Artamonov, who is turning 85 this year,” proudly said the President of the Lithuanian Volleyball Federation, Mr Darius Čerka.
“As a result, we are honoured that a number of well-known Volleyball players from the past, who have written a piece of Volleyball history in their respective countries, are competing here in Vilnius this weekend. We hope that this event will become some kind of a tradition to honour the best masters Volleyball players in Europe,” he added.
As many as seven teams are representing the host country, however the main favourites for the top spots of the podium are the teams from Russia – these have indeed been Lithuania’s main opponents in this age category for many years already and this time around they have travelled to Vilnius extremely eager to fight for the medals.
“This year we could welcome a number of new teams to the tournament. Usually, we are facing very strong women’s teams from Russia as well as Estonia’s champions in the 35+ age group. This is the youngest age division when it comes to masters Volleyball, so the fans are enjoying high-level Volleyball matches,” said the organiser of the tournament, Ms Dange Giliene. “In the men’s 50+ age group we can see Aviacon, a team which includes many former Ukrainian Volleyball stars. Lithuanian champions Tinklas will be trying to defend the crown they won last year in the men’s competition. We just want to enjoy a weekend packed with high-level Volleyball actions.”
