Sweden’s Falkenberg claim men’s NEVZA Club Championships title on home soil
News from the Zonal Associations
Falkenberg, Sweden, January 30, 2017. The Swedish national champions Falkenberg can now call themselves also the best team in Scandinavia. The Swedes rallied to gold at the finals of this year’s NEVZA Club Championships, which ended on Sunday. GENTOFTE Volley from Denmark won silver, and BK TROMSØ from Norway settled for the bronze.
The Final Four tournament took place in Falkenberg, Sweden, and the hosts were not in their hospitable mood. Falkenberg won all of their matches and claimed the NEVZA Club Championships trophy after three intense days.
In the final, Falkenberg faced Danish champions GENTOFTE Volley. The Danes claimed the first set, but Falkenberg levelled the match storming back to win the second one.
“It just feels amazing. We played at a really high level both today and in the semi-final yesterday,” said Falkenberg head coach Patrick Aparicio. “We faced a team that played in the CEV Volleyball Champions League and CEV Volleyball Cup earlier this season and we succeeded in beating them. Our team spirit was really high,” he added.
“It has been an incredible fun and entertaining journey to be a part of, even for me as a coach. To win in these surroundings at home in front of the fans, it is a special experience. A true honour,” Aparicio continued.
Both the third and fourth sets were very evenly contested, but Falkenberg eventually rallied to a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 28-26).
BK TROMSØ from Norway took bronze by winning the derby with Viking TIF BERGEN, in a remake of the Norwegian national cup final played only a week before.
