Agustín Martín Santos re-elected as Spanish Volleyball Federation President
News from the National Federations
Madrid, Spain, January 30, 2017. Agustín Martín Santos has been re-elected as President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB). The General Assembly of the RFEVB met on Sunday in Madrid and decided to appoint Agustín Martín Santos as the head of the country’s Volleyball governing body for the next four years.
“We should be very satisfied because Volleyball won today. Spanish Volleyball has made a decision in an election that registered the greatest participation in our history. It appears that the members of our sport wanted to manifest themselves and they have clearly done so,” said Martín Santos in his speech.
Agustín Martín Santos received 49 of the 68 votes cast by members of the Assembly, so he was elected to preside over the RFEVB for another four-year term; 18 votes went to the other candidate, former star player and 2007 European champion Rafael Pascual, whereas one vote was void. The newly elected President called for the unity and cohesion of Spain’s Volleyball family to continue working for the progress of the sport.
“Democracy designates the will of the majority and we must comply with the decision of the majority. This is the fifth time that Spanish Volleyball has elected me as president, and I doubt that Spanish Volleyball has been wrong five times. For me personally it is a satisfaction because if people vote for me, it is because I may have done things right over the years,” said the re-elected president who paid a special tribute to the successful high-level players who join the new Assembly, such as Pablo Herrera, Adrian Gavira, Liliana Fernandez Steiner, Elsa Baquerizo or Angela Lobato among others. Agustin Martin Santos especially praised the figure of Pablo Herrera, whom he described as “the best player in the history of Spanish Beach Volleyball.”
Agustín Martín Santos was first elected as RFEVB President in 2000 and will lead the national federation for a fifth term until 2020.
