Kuzyutkin and Shlyapnikov named Russian coaches
News from the National Federations

Moscow, Russia, February 3, 2017. Vladimir Kuzyutkin and Sergey Shlyapnikov have been appointed as head coaches to the Russian women’s and men’s Volleyball teams on two-year deals.

Kuzyutkin takes over from Yury Marichev and Shlyapnikov succeeds Vladimir Alekno, both of whom stepped down following the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.

It is Kuzyutkin’s second spell as women’s head coach after he led the team from 2009 to 2011. Under his tenure, Russia won gold at the Japan 2010 FIVB World Championship. He most recently worked as head coach to Bulgaria.

Shlyapnikov is well-known for his work with Russia’s age-group teams. He led the U19 team to the 1999 and 2011 FIVB U19 World Championship as well as to six European titles. The 55-year-old also was head coach to Dinamo KRASNODAR in the Russian league.

Alekno led Russia to gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, 2013 FIVB World League and the 2013 CEV European Championship. Under Marichev, Russia’s women twice won the CEV European Championship (in 2013 and 2015) as well as silver (in 2015) and bronze (2014) in the FIVB World Grand Prix.
