ROESELARE and BEVEREN retain Belgian cup crowns before sell-out crowd
News from the National Federations
Antwerp, Belgium, February 12, 2017. Knack ROESELARE and Asterix Avo BEVEREN claimed Belgium’s national cup crowns on Sunday before a sell-out crowd of 11,000+ at Sportpaleis in Antwerp.
“We played the national cup finals for the third straight year here in this famous venue before more than 11,000 fans. What an amazing success,” said the Organising Director of the Cup Finals and General Director of the Flemish Volleyball Federation, Mr Geert De Dobbeleer.
Two teams currently competing in the CEV Volleyball Champions League stood in front of each other in the men’s final. Knack ROESELARE stormed to a 2-0 lead (25-19, 25-23) in their matchup with Noliko MAASEIK but trailed 7-15 in the third set, with the Argentinean-born Nicolas Bruno leading the way for Noliko. Some substitutions asked by the coaching staff of Knack broke Noliko’s rhythm and ROESELARE eventually emerged victorious with the help of their top scorer Hendrik Tuerlinckx – and with Gertjan Claes sealing the final 26-24 with an ace.
Pre-favourites Asterix Avo BEVEREN – who recently progressed to the quarterfinals of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup – initially trailed 6-13 in the opening set of their matchup with VDK GENT Dames. However, after improving their blocking game and with rising star Britt Herbots shining bright, Asterix won the first set (26-24). Though everything seemed to go just easy for BEVEREN, they dropped the third set before rallying to a 3-1 victory (26-24, 25-15, 22-25, 25-18) to nail their thirteenth national cup title – as many as those won by their head coach Gert Vande Broek.
Next year’s national cup finals will be taking place at Sportpaleis as well on February 17-18, 2018.
