National cup winners crowned in Hungary
News from the National Federations
Budapest, Hungary, February 14, 2017. Hungary’s national cup finals took place this past weekend at Érd Arena, with the men’s team from Szolnok and the women’s team from Békéscsaba claiming the top honours.
The national cup finals organised by the Hungarian Volleyball Federation drew much attention from fans and media alike. The women’s competition opened the programme on Saturday with Fatum NYIREGYHAZA beating JASZBERENY 3-1 after coming back from one set down to settle for the bronze medals. As in 2016, Linamar – BÉKÉSCSABAI RSE played Vasas Obuda BUDAPEST in the ‘big final’. Vasas Obuda were able to keep the pace of the reigning national cup and national league champions for two sets, but in the end Linamar cruised to a landslide 25-6 win in the third set to retain the crown they had claimed last year.
The winners of the 2016 edition of the men’s competition, Fino KAPOSVAR SE lost 2-3 to KECSKEMET RC and ended up in fourth place this time around. SZOLNOK rallied to a comprehensive 3-0 victory in the gold medal match with Pénzügyőr BUDAPEST as Brazilian-born player Iurgen Hummes Specht set the tempo for the eventual winners. This victory accounts for SZOLNOK’s first ever title in the Hungarian national cup.
