Otepää, Estonia, February 20, 2017. On the weekend that the 2017 CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour started in Turkey, the sport was also played in Estonia. Otepää hosted the World Cup in cross-country skiing and alongside the nordic event programme the first ever Estonia – Latvia Snow Volleyball matches were held capturing the interest of many of those on the mountain.
Two-time Estonian Beach Volleyball champions Karl Jaani and Rain Raud stood against a strong Latvian team of Rihards Finsters and Edgars Točs who are in 56th place in the FIVB Beach Volleyball ranking. A highly intensive and competitive match was won 3-2 by the Estonian duo. “The Latvian duo are physically much more powerful than we are but after the first set we were confident that we can play against them. In Snow Volleyball it seems that physical dominance is not so evident,” Raud commented.
After the Baltic derby there was also a show game where the Calgary 1988 Winter Olympic nordic combined bronze medallist, Allar Levandi, and his teammate Ago Markvardt, who was fifth six years later in Lillehammer, played, amongst others.
