Israeli Cup Finals to make history for Volleyball and women’s sports
News from the National Federations

Tel Aviv, Israel, March 1, 2017. The final stage of the Israeli national cup will be taking place on March 8 – in conjunction with International Women’s Day. The matches will be broadcast nationwide with Hapoel MATE-ASHER AKKO playing Maccabi TEL-AVIV for the men’s crown, before Maccabi XT HAIFA play Hapoel KFAR SABA for the women’s title.

The Israel Volleyball Association are working hard in order to make this a truly memorable event, also since the women’s title-deciding match will be broadcast during prime time.

“Volleyball is a joyful and colourful sport; it is like a concert which connects everyone involved, from the teams performing on the court to the supporters in the stands,” says Dan Shiray of the Israel Volleyball Association. “Volleyball also combines the players’ virtuosity with their athleticism. The DJ accompanies their actions by mixing dramatic music that goes to every corner of the sports hall with festive tunes, which account for a carnival atmosphere and help the players reach higher and pursue the biggest achievements.”

In order to raise the profile of the event, the Israel Volleyball Association have decided for the women’s final to be played during prime time on International Women’s Day. It is the first time in history that the women’s final will be contested after the men’s title-deciding match.

“At the beginning some people objected to this idea,” Shiray continues, “but our leadership supported the plan and I am convinced that this year’s Cup finals will raise further awareness around Volleyball and women’s sports in general.”
