Belgium finish #EuroVolleyU16 qualifier on a high note
2017 U16 CEV Volleyball European Championship - Women
Luxembourg, April 16, 2017. Belarus, Belgium and the Netherlands have secured their qualification for the Final Round of the inaugural U16 Women European Championship, and another qualifying event will follow next week in Greece to complete the line-up for the competition, which will be taking place in late July in Bulgaria. The winners of the four second-round pools plus the two second-placed teams with the best result - one of these spots has already been taken by Denmark - will make it to Sofia and Samokov, thus joining hosts Bulgaria and the winners of last year’s zonal first-round qualifiers – Turkey, Russia, Czech Republic, Finland and Italy.
Pool C in Holte (DEN)
Both Estonia and Iceland were still without wins in Pool C before their last match. Finally, Estonia got a taste of triumph with a 3-0 win (25-13, 25-10, 25-7). Estonia head coach Peeter Vahtra: “I am happy with the win today. It was a good way to end this qualification. We knew Belgium were strong, but Denmark are definitely the positive surprise of this tournament, and Iceland are getting better with each match that they play. We will go home and continue to work hard for future qualifications.”
In the group ‘final’ between Denmark and Belgium, the young Yellow Tigers came out on top after an exciting match with a 3-1 win (22-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-19). Belgium head coach Yorick Vande Velde: “I am very happy with the win. The girls have worked hard for this. After losing the first set due to too many service errors, we changed our strategy and pushed the service more, and this stopped the two strongest attackers from Denmark. The team showed a good fighting spirit and a lot of variation in their game.”
