‘Forest Volleyball’ a major hit in Belarus during summer season
News from the National Federations
Minsk, Belarus, June 19, 2017. Volleyball and Beach Volleyball have been growing steadily in the Republic of Belarus. The Belarusian men’s and women’s national teams have been participating in all major international competitions – thus achieving very encouraging results, including a bronze medal from this year’s U18 Women’s European Championship. Beach Volleyball is also growing at a fast pace, and a number of facilities are now available for players to train and develop. However, Volleyball is growing also at an amateur level in the country, which will host the 2019 edition of the European Games.
Many summer camps and festivals take place in the summer season across the country and Volleyball always features prominently on their programme. In such cases, the competition follows different formats, with men and women playing together, with each team consisting of four up to six players aside. The matches take place on a beach or even in the forest – and to this extent Belarus may have invented a new variety of the game, which locals call ‘forest Volleyball’. This kind of competitions is becoming extremely popular and up to 100 amateur players have participated in such events. Such tournaments regularly take place from June to August, i.e. until the end of the summer season, in some of the most iconic places across the Republic of Belarus.
