CEV President pays high-profile visit to Republic of Moldova
News from the CEV

Chisinau, Republic of Moldova, March 31, 2018. CEV President Aleksandar Boričić and CEV Board of Administration member Zdeslav Barač have paid a truly historic visit to the Republic of Moldova in conjunction with the 25th anniversary since the establishment of the Moldovan Volleyball Federation. The highlights of the visit included a meeting with the President of the Republic of Moldova, Mr Igor Dodon, as well as with the country’s highest-ranking authorities in charge of sports and youth.

The CEV President and Mr Barač had on Saturday as many as three high-profile meetings, all focussing on how national authorities can help the Volleyball Federation of the Republic of Moldova further develop and grow their activities with the support of the FIVB and CEV.

The CEV’s authorities enjoyed the opportunity to have friendly and extremely productive talks with the country’s President, H.E. Mr Igor Dodon, as well as with the President of the National Olympic and Sport Committee, Mr Nicolae Juravschi and the State Secretary for Youth and Sport from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Research, Mr Radu Rebeja. Mr Boričić singled out a number of opportunities for the local Volleyball family to grow – such as the CEV’s ‘Volleyball at School’ project, the Olympic Solidarity Programme and the possible donation of an outdoor Volleyball court to a Moldovan school.

The CEV President expressed his gratitude towards Mr Dodon for the help he has provided to the Volleyball Federation of the Republic of Moldova this far. On the other hand, all of the Moldovan authorities thanked the CEV President and all other members of the CEV’s family for their involvement and support in growing Volleyball in Moldova. Mr Rebeja announced that the Moldovan government have allocated funds for the construction of a modern sports arena – something the CEV President was extremely pleased with, while announcing the CEV would study the feasibility and opportunity to provide Moldova with a Volleyball flooring for that same facility.

Later on Saturday, the CEV’s officials attended the annual Moldovan Super Cup match between 2017 national champions Dinamo MAI and last year’s national cup winners Astra, both teams from the country’s capital, Chisinau. Dinamo MAI eventually pulled out a 3-2 victory at the end of a dramatic match (25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 17-25, 15-13). Mr Dodon, Mr Boričić, Mr Rebeja and Mr Barač all attended the medal ceremony to award the eventual winners and runners-up of the competition as representatives of the Moldovan Federation distributed balls and nets donated by the CEV to local Volleyball clubs.

During their stay in Chisinau, the CEV President and Mr Barač had a series of meetings with the management of the Volleyball Federation of the Republic of Moldova. The discussions focussed on the existing issues and challenges relating to the future and further development of Volleyball in the country. The CEV President stressed that despite the existing financial constraints, Moldovan Volleyball has achieved quite good results this far, especially in men’s Volleyball, but for the future much attention has to go towards the development of the young generation of local Volleyball players, possibly through the help and support provided by the CEV’s ‘Volleyball at School’ project. Mr Boričić said that Snow Volleyball deserves much attention as well, since this rapidly growing sport may feature on the programme of the Winter Olympics in future.

On the third and final day of their visit to Chisinau, Mr Boričić, Mr Barač and representatives of the Moldovan Volleyball family convened once more to draft the guidelines of a strategic vision in order to promote and grow Volleyball in Moldova at all levels.
